Datacasting – why do we need it?

Datacasting is the extension and enhancement of digital broadcasting systems. The insertion of data travelling together with digital TV programs in DVB or with digital sound programs in DAB offers new exciting applications and services.

To broadcast only the existing programs in similar quality, but on a digital basis does not seem attractive enough that the audience is willing to join us in the digital future. We want to have new services, more than TV and radio, interactivity, supplementary information, regional and local services and Rich Media on our TV sets and sound broadcast receivers. And mobile reception of data as well as an effective utilization of the valuable resource bandwidth are demanded.

Datacasting or Data Broadcasting is based on the insertion or encapsulation of data within digital program signals like MPEG-2 Transport Streams or DAB ETI or STI signals. Most of the data is available or generated in computer networks. Therefore, the insertion of Internet Protocol (IP) frames within transport signals is needed.

The insertion of data is done independently from the existing, running programs. Thus, Datacasting can enrich the broadcasters’ services very easily and without any interruption or influence. Especially the native insertion, after a main program multiplexer, is a great approach. This allows to insert data with local interest and meaning before the signals feed the transmitter station. On each transmitter, you could have the combination of country-wide TV or sound programs whereby the data service is localized and of regional interest.

Also the combination of TV and data, for instance in order to implement e-commerce, or better tcommerce services, will be a benefit for the audience. A fantastic and effective opportunity of Datacasting is to transmit free of charge additional information in the background while the users are watching TV. Just a single press on the remote control switches from TV to the data browser to make use of additional, supplementary information, e.g. product brochures. in difference to real Internet, the user does not have to wait until the information is available, as it has already been received by the time it is requested.

The state-of-the-art Internet technology is capable to enrich digital broadcasting. Especially Rich Media, the combination of pictures, movies, animation and text automatically adapted to the capabilities of the end user devices, will influence the convergence of the different network, telecommunication and broadcasting technologies.

MP3 or the upcoming MP4 sound, highly compressed MPEG-4 movies, Flash animations, XML based presentations and a lot more of such content formats will be used to catch the audience with new exciting broadcast applications.
